The Fish

We pursue Browns, Rainbows, and Brook Trout in these parts. The Brown Trout is the most widely chased of the three and makes up the quest of the majority of our trout trips.  We fish trout in a number of different situations, using a number of different techniques. River conditions and type also vary, from tailwater fishing to small secluded brush laden creeks.

Joe Metes (left) with a "Hawg" of a Brown Trout. At over 26",
this is truly a world-class river Brown. We specialize in "hunting" BIG fish!  Some of the bigger fish taken by Ultimate Outfitters clients have been a  31"/12lb. Brown and a 27 1/2"/7lb. Rainbow. These were both resident (caught above two dams!), wild trout!!

(right) This 24" Brown was taken on a streamer in early May on the AuSable River. Fly Fishing with streamers, and Spin Fishing with Rapalas, are deadly on big fish like this one during May and June. September is the sleeper of the summer...BIG fish are taken each year during the last couple of weeks of trout season!

Dry fly fishing is a favorite of many fly fishermen.
We are fortunate to have tremendous hatches that
can bring trout to the surface with reckless abandon.
Some of our best hatches include Hendricksons,
Gray and Brown Drakes, Sulphurs, BWO, and Hex.
These hatches peak in May and June.

(left: Doug Nelson shows off this heavy, wild Brown taken on a Roberts Drake dry pattern. The fish measured 23" and weighed just over 5 lbs.)

Another great dry fly Brown taken right at
dusk on a Hendrickson spinner during the second
week of May on the AuSable River. At 23 inches,
it's truly a monster trout on a 4wt fly rod.
We'd love to put you on fish like this!!
